The
first Bangkok Gay Festival was organized in the Silom/Surawong
areas in November 1999. The inaugural event was the first
of its kind in Southeast Asia, with lavishly costumed gay
performers and thousands of spectators. The parade, with disco
music, street dancing and brightly decorated floats, proceeded
along Silom and Suriwong Roads. The event attracted local
gays, and those from further afield such as Singapore, Taiwan,
Hong Kong, and Japan.

Bangkok Gay Festival in Bangkok, Phuket Gay Festival
held at Patong Beach. It was taken place in daylight,
with a stage on the beach, a volleyball contest
and beauty contest. Featuring as many Thai motifs
tinsel, the parade had trucks, group of marchers
and even elephants, ending in a block party.
The
2000 festival was an even more lavish affair, with a clear-cut
schedule of events lasting from April through to the year
end, with parties, drag contests, the Utopia awards and various
press conferences.
The
grand finale attracted 20,000 revelers from international
groups and from Thailand. Once again, most of the action was
concentrated along Silom and Narathivat Rachanakharin Roads.
The official party was held at the Icon Club & Discotheque
on Silom Soi 4.
