The
term "gay" has been borrowed from English
and is used as a Thai word, but there has not been
a strong feeling of "gayness" among Thai
gays. Thai gays often seem as obsessed as their
western counterparts with labels and roles, hence
discussions of whether one is a "gay queen"
(passive) or "gay king" (active) are common.
Also "gathoey" or "ladyboy"
is a much used (and abused) term. It is used to
refer to people who cross-dress, but also by some
Thais (gay and straight) to refer to someone who
is effeminate, in outrageous drag, and sometimes
even as a general term for "gay".
Many
gay and lesbian resources were provide by local and international
organizations or groups. Various information ex. books, cyberspaces,
organizations, communities, hotels and restaurants directory,
package tour, etc. are informed.
The
Anjaree Group is a local lesbian organization that sometimes
arranges social, educational, or travel events that welcome
visiting woman. Anjaree suggests visitors attend the Friday
Women's Night at the Utopia Cafe. They also occasionally put
out a Thai language newsletter.
