Officially,
bars and clubs are supposed to close at 2.00 am, but this
rule is only strictly applied in a few areas and at certain
places. Several bars and discos stay open until the dawn and
do most of their business after the go-go bars close at 2.00
am.
The
most popular places are the late-night discos such as Peppermint
Bistro on Patpong 1 and the King's Lounge, on the short soi
running between Patpong 1 and Patpong 2. The place gets packed
with free-lancing bar girls that arrive after the other bars
have closed. The action here continues through to the daylight
hours.
Tourist
Police
The
Tourist Police can always be found at the end of
Patpong Road, on Silom. They are on hand to assist
tourists with any kind of problems concerning bars
in the area.
Elsewhere
in the Sukhumvit area, Nana Disco (also called Angels Disco),
located in the Nana Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 4, has been popular
for years as an after-hours hang-out. Along with the nearby
Rainbow Disco (behind Nana Hotel), the place attracts a mixed
crowd of 'farangs' and bar workers.
The
same holds true of Thermae Coffee House, that undying Bangkok
institution, which since 1996 has been located on Sukhumvit
Road close to Soi 15, at the basement of the Ruamchitt Plaza
& Hotel. A coffee shop in the old Thai sense (basically
a bar attached to a massage parlor), the Thermae has been
around since Vietnam War times, although the original building
was knocked down in 1996 and rebuilt. As always, a colorful
crowd of single males, free-lancing females and transvestites
converge on the place at around 2.00 am and the action continues
to dawn.
