Fancy
a bite to eat? Patpong has every style of food, from 'somtam',
sold on the street through to English pub grub and classy
French gourmet cuisine, and all without breaking the bank.
Here are a few places to try out:
Bobby's
Arms
Despite its rather insalubrious location on the second floor
of the car park, behind the Foodland Supermarket on Patpong
2, Bobby's Arms offers some of the best British food in town.
The restaurant-cum-bar is definitely good enough to take the
in-laws. Recommended dishes include the New Zealand lamb and
traditional British fare such as Cornish pasties, fish 'n'
chips and steak and kidney pie.
Derby
King
Derby King on Patpong 1 offers American-style deli sandwiches,
burgers, meatloaf and a huge menu of Western and Thai dishes.
The food is wholesome and cheap, though the atmosphere is
slightly 'bizarre'. Derby King stays open 24 hours and is
a good place to get supper (or breakfast) after the bars close.
French
Kiss
French Kiss is one of the open-air island bars in the middle
of Patpong 2. The bar offers good cheap French food under
200 baht, videos and cable TV. Try the pork chop or chicken
fillets in mustard sauce. All dishes come with a basket heaped
with bread. The cheeses are great for anyone with a craving
for western delicacies, and the espresso just superb. The
management and many of the customers of French Kiss are also
French (half of the customers seem to be drinking Pernod or
Ricard).
La
Fiesta
Mexican food and entertainment is the theme of this restaurant,
at the corner of Silom and Patpong 1. Try the tortillas with
beef, beans and salsa, the Tex-Tex T-bone steak or sizzling
fajitas. Wash the spicy food down with a pitcher of margarita.
Though by no means the cheapest eatery on Patpong, La Fiesta
is a good place to bring family or friends. Open 11 am to
2 am with happy hour from 2 pm to 7 pm.
Le
Bouchon
A French restaurant on Patpong 2 (near the Pavilion Hotel)
specializing in the culinary delights of central France. Prices
are very reasonable for a restaurant of this standard. The
Bearnaise Beef Fillet is a dream. Or for a change, try the
Lamb Fillet in Rosemary Sauce. Opens 11.30 am to 11.30 pm.
Madrid
Cocktail
The Madrid, a cozy lounge bar on Patpong 1, close to Peppermint
Bistro and the short-stay Madrid Mansion (MM) Apartments,
offers what's touted as the best pizza on Patpong. Most of
the dishes in this mainly expat bar are less than 200 baht.
The daily special is usually very good value.
O'Reillys
This typical Irish pub is located on the corner of Silom and
Thaniya, not far from Patpong. Dishes such as Irish stew and
a variety of Western favorites are better than basic, and
slightly higher in price. O'Reillys is one of the few places
in Bangkok serving draught Guinness and Kilkenny's.
Shenanigans
Formerly Delaneys, Shenanigans is the place that started the
craze for Irish pubs. Located on Convent Road, just a short
walk across Silom from Patpong, Shenanigans gets packed in
the evenings with white-collar workers from Silom's glass
towers. Good place to listen to live music and chat with friends.
Prices of the food are above average but the portions are
also large. Try the Irish stew with a plate of bread. The
draught Guinness is sublime for those who can afford it.
Thai
Room
The Thai Room on Patpong 2 under the boardwalk offers dishes
from representative cuisines around the world - Thai, US,
Tex-Mex and more. Good, basic, wholesome food is served at
prices anyone can afford.
Tip
Top Restaurant
Pretty standard Thai restaurant in every way. Dishes cover
virtually everything in the Thai spectrum with some international
favorites thrown in. Stick with the Thai food to avoid disappointment.
Gets crowded with Patpong habitues in the evenings. Located
on Patpong 1, quite close to the more risque bars of Pussy
Galore & co.
