Patpong's
bars can generally be classified into ground floor and second
floor establishments. The street level bars are usually just
simple go-go bars with bikini-clad dancers. The upper floors
are where the slightly more risque behind-closed-doors erotic
cabarets take place.
Tourist
Police
The
Tourist Police can always be found at the end of
Patpong Road, on Silom. They are on hand to assist
tourists with any kind of problems concerning bars
in the area.
Most
people find these shows leave them cold. The girls perform
the nightly rituals in a rehearsed fashion that is usually
far from erotic. Shows generally include a fixed menu of acts,
in which naked dancers open bottles, shoot blow-pipes and
perform a variety of other tricks using only their vaginal
muscles. The 'string of razor blades' trick is one that most
spectators would rather not have seen. The finale is inevitably
a mechanical 'sex show' which, again, is more boring and embarrassing
than erotic.
Some
upstairs bars have been known to charge extortionate cover
fees for entertainment. These bars often have touts on the
street to entice people upstairs. The moral of the story:
don't go with the street touts. If you do happen to encounter
a situation like this, just pay the bill, get a copy of the
receipt, and take it to the Tourist Police stationed at the
Silom end of Patpong Road. They will go to the bar with you
and you can usually get your money back without any problems.
The best thing to do is avoid the whole unpleasant experience
in the first place. Try out the reputable bars such as Queen's
Castle, Pussy Galore or Firecat, which have no cover charges
and the drink prices are fixed. Drinks in the second-floor
bars cost slightly more than the downstairs places, but are
still amazingly cheap by Western standards. Couples and women
are welcome to these bars.
