For
an unbroken period of more than four centuries, Ayutthaya
held sway as one of the mightiest empires of Southeast Asia.
The former capital of Siam, Ayutthaya's wealth and power extended
far beyond its borders, with flourishing trade and diplomatic
links to Europe and the Far East.
Today,
Ayutthaya boasts numerous magnificent ruins and artifacts
from its former glory. Lying just to the north of Bangkok
on the Chao Phraya River, the province can be visited easily
in a day, although to cover the main sites a longer trip would
be needed. A broad swathe of Ayutthaya town has been declared
a UNESCO National Heritage Site, a testament to the province's
architectural and cultural importance.
