Founded in the year 1238 A.D., Sukhothai (means Dawn of Happiness) was the first independent Thai Kingdom. It was also the capital of Thailand for approximately 120 years. Historical artifacts show that, Thai culture, especially the Thai alphabet and language, were greatly developed in Sukhothai during the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng. The province's most famous attraction is the ancient city of Sukhothai, which forms the main part of the Sukhothai Historical Park. This is also designated as one of the World Heritage Sites.
