
Khon Kaen is a bustling, prosperous
province in the heart of Thailand's northeastern region known
as Isaan. Established in 1783, today Khon Kaen city is the
center for regional development projects and home to the northeast's
largest university. In addition to being a tourism and transportation
hub for the provinces of Isaan, it is also the region's central
gateway offering convenient links to all the northern and
central provinces.
Established
in 1783, but with excavations going back thousands of years,
the province is a treasure trove of historical interest for
archeologists and historians.

majority of the population belong to the Phaw Thai (Isaan
Thai) ethnic group and the Laos-Wieng sub-group. Khon Kaen
people are proud of their Isaan dialect, which is similar
to Laotian, but sometimes difficult for other Thais to understand.

provincial capital is one of four Thai cities selected by
the government for accelerated growth. A number of improvements
to the city's infrastructure have already been undertaken
and more are planned for the future.
