Sunthorn
Phu, the Shakespeare of Thailand, lived in Rayong province
on the east coast of the Gulf of Siam. He was inspired to
write his masterpiece by the beauty of Rayong's Ko Samet island.
Ko Samet is now a favorite of those who seek a relaxed and
leisurely beach interlude, while at the same time Rayong province
is developing into a dynamic center of heavy industry and
commercial activity.

many centuries Ko Samet has been a safe harbor and a haven
from pirates. Rayong province was also where Thai General
Phraya Taksin rallied his troops before counter attacking
and defeating the Burmese after the sacking of Ayutthaya.
