Travel Q&A

Welcome \ Travel \ Overview

People, Education & Language

The people of Ayutthaya traditionally follow an agricultural way of life, with a large proportion of the populace involved in rice cultivation. In 1998, the population of Ayutthaya stood at 730,740 with a fairly high density of 286 persons / sq km. In fact, the population three centuries ago at the height of the Ayutthaya era was reportedly over a million, higher than the present-day figure.

The majority of Ayutthayans are ethnic Thais, who speak Thai as their primary language and who have Thai parentage. Chinese, descended from immigrants who came to Thailand as farmers and merchants, and persons of mixed Thai and Chinese descent make up the largest minority group. Other minorities include Mon, Burmese, Lao and Khmer.

The people of Ayutthaya speak 'standard Thai', the dialect spoken in Bangkok and other provinces of the lower Central Plains.
