Farming
provides a livelihood for most of the people of Kanchanaburi.
The principal crops in this fertile province are sugar cane,
maize, tobacco, cassava (tapioca), wheat and cotton. Tourism
is an important source of income for the province, both from
foreign visitors and Thais. The province's war-time history
and rich natural resources provide the principal attractions.
Kanchanaburi
and Tak, the neighboring province to the north, are both important
sources of minerals, ores and gemstones. Kanchanaburi's gem-mining
activities are concentrated at Bo Phloi, around 50 km north
of the provincial seat. Gems produced and sold in the area
include sapphire, amethyst and topaz.
Cross-border
trading with Myanmar, particularly in timber products and
gems, constitutes another source of earnings for many people.
