Kanchanaburi,
located in the western border region of Thailand, remains
largely wild and undeveloped, with a relatively small population.
The province's total population in 1998 was 775,198, with
a density of just 40 persons / sq km, the third lowest in
Thailand after Mae Hong Son and Tak.
Situated
on the national border with Myanmar, Kanchanaburi is home
to diverse ethnic groups. Cross-border migration of Mons,
Burmans, Karens, Thais and other groups is nothing new to
the province. However, recent ethnic conflicts in the border
areas have stepped up the flood of immigrants into the province.
In some frontier outposts such as Sangkhla Buri, Burmese language
is spoken almost as frequently as Thai.
