People, Education & Language  

Loei's estimated population, as of December 1999, is 635,845. They speak 'Isaan', the local language of people living in the northeast. Isaan is also what people in the northeast are called. It is similar to the language spoken in Laos.

Based on a survey taken in 1998, the number of primary schools in Loei is 455, of which 104 schools have the potential to be upgraded to secondary schools. It has 31 secondary schools, 5 vocational schools and one university (Ratchapat).
