In the past, living standard of people in Mae Hong Son was considered undeveloped. When the government first took concern and studied the province, more than 70% of the areas that needed the urgent development. The central government then provided essential utilities, communications, and support to local business in order to create sources of income to the province. Now, apart from agricultural products such as rice, soybean and garlic which people grow for living, another major earning of the local comes from tourism which has significantly boomed over the last seven years. There are many resorts opening around the areas of the capital and sightseeing is flourishing. From the town that used to be isolated due to the difficulties in transportation and communications, Mae Hong Son now can not be ignored by those travelers who plan to visit the northern region.
