Phangnga
is a primarily agricultural province in the south of Thailand.
The chief economic crop is rubber, and rubber plantations
cover a considerable area, especially noticeable along the
roads. However, large areas are also given over to food crops.
Considerable amounts of rice, vegetables and fruits including
coconuts, cashew nuts, palms and coffee plants are produced
here in Phangnga. The second most profitable economic activity
is fisheries because of the province’s rich natural
marine resources. One of the most important sources of revenue
for the province is the charcoal taken from
the extensive mangrove forests because they cover considerable
portions of the province. Also in Phangnga highly prized
bird nests are obtained by itinerant collectors who scramble
over the seaside cliffs to get them for use in the Chinese
delicacy “bird’s nest soup,” a broth made from the hardened
swifts’ saliva which holds the nests together. Average annual
income in Phangnga is 37,171 baht per person.
Emblem of
the province: a tin dredger with the forested hilltop in the
background and prostrate elephants.
