Overview of the Southern Region

The southern region of Thailand is located between the Andaman Sea
of the Indian Ocean to the west and the South China Sea of the Pacific Ocean to the west. The south consists of 14 provinces, occupying an area of about 70,715 square kilometers. The famous Phuket, Samui, Phi Phi, Krabi and Phangnga are located in the southern part of Thailand.

With varied topography ranging from basin areas for cultivation of paddy and vegetables, wild jungles, mountains, beaches, seaside resorts, waterfalls, caves, lakes, beaches and islands of all sizes, the Southern Peninsula offers spectacular scenery throughout.

There are two rainy seasons in the south. May to September is the southwest monsoon period, which brings heavy rains to the west coast of the region (Phuket). November to February is the northeast monsoon period, which brings heavy rains to the east coast (those regions south of Chumporn province).

The southern region is covered with tropical dense rainforests. However, the natural attraction that brings fame to the southern region is its abundant beaches and islands which are scattered all throughout the region.

The tourism boom in the south during the last two decades has brought rapid development of accommodations and facilities to cater to tourists and visitors. It's easy to find anything from five-star luxury resorts to low-rise bungalow buildings or even camping sites when you are traveling in the south.

If you choose the southern region of Thailand as your next travel destination, beprepared to enjoy the wide range of water sports the southern region can offer: scuba diving, snorkeling, canoeing, kayaking, yachting, cruising and many more.

With many famous tourist attractions in the south, the infrastructure to make it easily accessible has developed a lot in recent years. Air travel is the most convenient means of transportation to the south. You can reach there via Bangkok airport. Many international airlines offer direct flights from their home country to the south of Thailand, especially to Phuket and Samui islands.
Budget travelers can reach there by public bus or trains.
