Ayutthaya
and Sukhothai are unique amongst the provinces as the only
lands where the Thai golden ages took place. Sukhothai province
is full of archaeological sites and objects which proclaim
the constant evolution of its history and culture dating back
many hundreds of years. The way of life of the Sukhothai people
represents a valuable cultural heritage in itself. Sukhothai
greatly impresses its visitors with its gorgeous Buddhist
temples which have their own unique characters that differ
greatly from those of temples in other regions.
A common belief of Sukhothai
people in the past and indeed now has been the faith in Hinayana
Buddhism. Like most Thais, they feel the truth of this doctrine
of the Buddha matches their spiritual needs. This form of
Buddhism was preferred over the Mahayana Buddhism and Hinduism
of the previous Khmer rulers.
