km (267 miles) north of Bangkok, Sukhothai is located in the
lower north of Thailand. It covers approximately 6,596 sq
km of northern flatland. In the north, Sukhothai shares its
border with Phrae, with Uttaradit and Phitsanulok in the east,
with Tak and Lampang in the west, and with Kamphaeng Phet
and Phitsanulok in the south. About 33.79% of the whole area
is still covered by rich timberland even though the deforestation
in Sukhothai, according to the Department of Forestry, has
increased due to the province's agricultural and economic
expansion in recent years.
Sukhothai
has three seasons-hot, rainy, and cool-like most other provinces
in the country. But as one of the northern provinces, Sukhothai
normally has a little longer cool season as well as lower
temperature than those provinces in other regions. The average
temperature is about 22.9°C to 26.1°C. The lowest temperature,
measured in 1995, was 18.6°C and the highest was 29.5°C in
1998.
