Surat Thani,
meaning “City of Good People”, is the largest city in the
south of Thailand, occupying 12,891 square kilometers. Bordered
by the Gulf of Thailand, it is 685 kilometers from
Bangkok. The nearby provinces it borders are Chumphon and
Ranong to the north, Nakorn Si Thammarat and Krabi to the
south, Phangnga and Ranong to the west and Nakorn Si Thammarat
to the east.
Plateau, low
basin, eastern seashores and a hundred islands clearly define
the visual characteristics of Surat Thani. Located on the
southern coast of Thailand, with high plateau and mountains
covered with valuable hardwood forests to the west, the province
has the main Buntad mountain range along the eastern
borderline, low basins in the central and eastern seashores
with a tremendous number of lush tropical islands along the
coast of Samui, Phangan, and Donsak districts. Two major rivers,
the Tapi and Phum Duang , run through Surat Thani.
Generally,
you will enjoy nice, warm weather here in Surat Thani
although the southwest and northeast monsoons have an effect
on the climate and cause rain year-round. There are only two
seasons in the year: hot and rainy. The rainy season lasts
over nine months and, on average, rain falls 166 days a year
in Surat Thani.
