People, Education & Language

The population of Surat Thani was recorded as 876,407 in December 1998. Its population rank out of the whole country is 23rd out of 76 and it covers an area of 12,892 square kilometers. The majority of Surat Thani citizenry is comprised of ethnic Thais with a large minority of Chinese in the provincial capital, and Muslim Thais. Most of the population is scattered around the rural areas including along the eastern coast and others, especially the Chinese, live in the towns. The average population density in Surat Thani is 54 persons per square kilometer. The current growth rate of the population averages 0.91% with the highest immigration rate in Samui and Phangan districts.

Most of the people in Surat Thani, just like other southern Thais, speak "pak tai" a southern dialect that confuses visitors from both other Thai regions and the world outside. Diction is short and fast, giving the aural impression of a tape played at the wrong speed.
