a large minority of Chinese in the provincial capital, and
Muslim Thais. Most of the population is scattered around the
rural areas including along the eastern coast and others,
especially the Chinese, live in the towns. The average population

Most of the
people in Surat Thani, just like other southern Thais, speak
"pak tai" a southern dialect that confuses visitors from both
other Thai regions and the world outside. Diction is short
and fast, giving the aural impression of a tape played at
the wrong speed.
