Handicraft
Villages
Ayutthaya
is one of the most important provinces in Thailand for the
development and promotion of traditional folk arts and crafts.
Woven products, steel implements, palm-leaf products and carved
wood are among the province's traditional crafts, some of
which date back to Ayutthaya's heyday over 200 years ago.
Aranyik
Village Handmade Knives: Aranyik is a small village in
Ayutthaya province, well known for its steel knives and swords.
The finest knives and swords are produced by descendents of
the original Aranyik blacksmiths in the times when Ayutthaya
was a major regional power. Aranyik is located off Highway
No 32 at Km 78-79, on the right hand side. Ban Aranyik is
in Tambon Tha Chang, Nakhon Luang District.
Rattan
Woven Products Village: Rattan is a climbing vine found
throughout the Malay Peninsula that is used to produce wonderfully
designed furniture and souvenir items. Ayutthaya's Woven Rattan
Village is located at Ban Yai, Tambon Ban Krathun, Sena District.
Palm
Leaf Hats and Other Products: The Thai people traditionally
wear hats made from dried palm leaves. For tourists and travelers,
they make perfect gifts or souvenirs. The place to buy palm-leaf
hats and other products is at Ban Yai, Tambon Bang Nangra,
Bang Pahan District.
Palm
Leaf Carp: These colorful creations make attractive mobile
decorations for the home. Thais traditionally hang them over
a baby's cradle to ensure the child will grow healthy and
strong. Ayutthaya's palm-leaf fish mobiles are made at Ban
Yai, Tambon Tha Vasukri, Muang District.
Carved
Wood Products: Ayutthaya's wood carvers have been famed
internationally since the Ayutthaya era of the 14th to 18th
centuries. Today wood products range from furniture through
to delicate carvings. Popular motifs include mythical Thai
creatures, angels and animals, particularly elephants. Ayutthaya's
carved wood products can be found at Ban Yai, Tambon Ban Mai,
Muang District.
