Tribal Research Institute Center

The Tribal Research Institute Center is located in the Chiang Mai University Campus. It contains a permanent cultural exhibition of all the northern hilltribes. Admission is free and the center is open Monday through Friday, from 8.30 am until noon and from 1.00 pm to 4.30 pm.

The Tribal Museum

The Tribal Museum was established in 1965 on the premises of the Tribal Research Institute. A collection of artifacts and costumes from six of the major hilltribe groups was originally collected to assist researchers and students to study hilltribe cultures. Later on the collection was expanded to include all the hilltribes. As the collection grew it was moved to a new location due to space limitations in the original building.

The collection was opened to the public for viewing in 1997 when it was transferred to its present location on the lake in Rachamankla Park. The public is encouraged to visit this museum to view the displays of handicrafts, costumes, jewelry, ornaments, agricultural tools, musical instruments and ceremonial paraphernalia. A daily slide and video show is available plus background information is provided on each of the tribes. There is also an exhibition on activities carried out by the Royal family out on behalf of the hilltribes as well as information on research sponsored by governmental and non-governmental agencies.
