Boat Trip to Sai Yok and Kaeng Lawa Cave

River KhwaeOne of the best ways to experience the unparalleled natural beauty of this province is to take a boat trip along the Khwae Noi River, the tributary featured in some of the Russian roulette scenes in 'The Deerhunter'.

The trip up the river from Kanchanaburi town to Sai Yok Waterfall allows the visitor to get close to the jungle wildlife at the water's edge. Who knows, you may even see a tiger coming down for a drink. More likely would be monitor lizards or various species of birds.

The Lawa Cave, just before the Sai Yok Falls, is one of the larger caverns in the area, with bizarre formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The Sai Yok Falls and National Park are well worth a stay (raft houses are available) for the rich diversity of fauna and flora to be found.

Boats for the trip along the Khwae Noi can be hired at Pak Saeng Pier in Tambon Tha Sao. The round trip costs about 1,000 to 1,200 baht for the boat, depending on your bargaining skills. The round trip takes about 4 hours.

Look for recreational sites in other provinces.
