Orchard Trips

In western Thailand, Phetchaburi is well known for its fruit orchards. The province's fine soils permit the cultivation of many varieties of fruit, but the most famous of all are Phetchaburi's rose apples or 'chomphu Phet' and sugar palms or 'ton tarn'.

Phet Rose Apples' vendorsFruits orchards at Tha Yang District, located about 25 km to the north of Cha-am District, are renowned for chomphu Phet and fragrant gold bananas or 'kluay hom thong' that are grown for export. To visit the orchards, contact the Tha Yang Cooperative Tel +66 32 461-153.

Making Tanod SugarBan Lad orchard, a plantation of sugar palms at Ban Lard District, is about 12 km to the north of Tha Yang District. The sugar palm, the main raw material for the production of sugar or 'num tarn tanod' and a local whisky called 'kra chae', is mostly planted at Ban Lard District. Here visitors can see how the fruits are gathered and processed to make kra chae. To visit the plantations, call Ban Lad Provincial Office +66 32 491-316 or the village headman +66 32 428-556, 440-300. Weekend trips should be booked in advance.
