Wa
Kor
Wa
Kor, a sub-district of Pranburi, achieved fame over a century
ago when King Rama IV made a trip there to witness a full
solar eclipse on August 18,1868. The event was predicted over
two years in advance, supposedly by the king himself. Wa Kor
sub-district south to Chumphon was thought to be the best
area to see the phenomenon. The king ordered construction
of a temporary royal pavilion at Wa Kor from which the observations
could be made. He visited the spot with a large entourage
and several foreign dignitaries.
King
Rama IV died from malaria just two months later, but his trip
to Wa Kor has been remembered ever since as Thailand's Science
Day. The king himself is still revered as Thailand's 'Father
of Science' and a historical science park has been set up
at Wa Kor to commemorate the event.
The
science park is located at km. 335 of Highway No. 4 (Phetkasem
Road), about 14 km south of Hua Hin. For more information,
