Khao
Thaphet Wildlife & Nature Education Station
Khao
Thaphet Wildlife & Nature Education Station is a home
to many wild animals in cages near the center. The sanctuary
covers an area of 1,162 acres with the highest point 210 meters
above sea level.
The
nature and wildlife center is located at Tambon Makarmtia
some 8 km from the municipal district. The peaceful and quiet
station is shaded with various kinds of plant and wood species
with the tranquil atmosphere of a park. There is a nice and
comfortable nature trail around the center so you can view
the many tropical wild animals. The spectacular panoramic
scenery of Ban Don - Surat Thani municipal town, the Tapi
River and Ban Don Bay can be seen from the hilltop.
Si
Surat Stupa, known locally as Phra That Khao Thaphet, lies
on the top of Tapi Hill in the center of Khao Thaphet Wildlife
& Nature Education Station. The stupa resembles a candle
and has an unusual but beautiful style of architecture. The
stupa enshrines highly revered Buddha relics. The Indian Government
made a donation of Buddha relics to Surat Thani some 40 years
ago. It was the first sacred place in Ban Don District, founded
in 1957 by King Rama IX, the present monarch.
One
can take the Surat - Nasarn Road, Highway 4009. Along the
Nasarn Rd. take a left turn and continue to the hilltop along
a paved road.
