Mu
Ban Phumriang Art Village
Mu
Ban Phumriang Art Village is located at Tambon Phumriang,
some 6 kms east of Chaiya District. The settlement is a fishing
village with a majority of Thai Muslims integrated with Thai
Buddhists. Phumriang has its own rich history. The ancestors
of most of the population were noblemen who emigrated from
Pattani or were forcibly moved from Thraiburi during the war
between Burma and Thailand in 1808.
Mu
Ban Phumriang is the most famous local crafts village in Surat
Thani. The village is noted for its traditional and unique
style of silk cloth, called 'Lai Yok Ped', a gold and silver
brocade silk cloth. Silk cloth is produced in five original
patterns including the highly prized Pi Kul Yok Cheung Lai,
Pi Kul Lek and Son Kaset styles. The favorite colors used
to weave the cloth are red, yellow and black.
Aside
from that, their jute headwear for both men and women adds
to the reputation of the village. To make jute headwear skillful
artisans use palm and palmary leafs. The skill has passed
from generation to generation to create a unique and elaborate
style.
After
you finish your shopping, you can go hiking to the beach.
There is an interesting spot where you can relax under sunny
skies in the vicinity of Phumriang. Just 2 km from Phumriang
village, the seashore, called Laem Poe Beach, is a quiet and
peaceful setting with a sandy beach.
One
can take a bus from the Surat Thani provincial town to Ranong
or Chumphon to get to Mu Ban Phumriang. Or else one can take
a bus directly from Chaiya to Phumriang.
