Oyster
Farms
Concentrated
in the estuary of the Kadae and Ta Thong rivers in Amphoe
Kanchanadit, oyster farms are located in areas surrounded
with mangrove jungle, mire and brackish water making a perfect
breeding ground and nursery for oysters.
Oysters
found around these estuarine areas are considerably larger
than those found elsewhere. They are famously pleasant on
the palate with their pure white, soft, sweet flesh. Oysters
have become one of the most renowned products of Surat Thani
and this reputation is reflected in the motto of the province.
The locals frequently say to visitors that they should drop
by for a plate of oysters before going on to explore the coconut
islands.
To
visit the farms one can hire long-tailed boats for 8-10 passengers
from Tha Thong quayside and it takes some 30 minutes to get
there. The hire rate is 100 baht per person. After a nice
ride on a long-tailed boat with picturesque scenery, would-be
visitors can view oysters being harvested. Visitors are recommended
to get there early in the morning or during low tide because
it is the best time for those who wish to see oysters clinging
to cement poles at the farms.
